Say NO to Bad Breath

Are you suffering from bad breath? A large section of the population will agree to have experienced bad breath at some point in their life. But what causes bad breath, is it merely just onions? Read ahead to know what causes bad breath and how you can treat it.


The dentists refer to bad breath as halitosis. Various microbes degrade in the mouth to cause malodour. Compounds which smell bad are produced inside the mouth owing to this bacterial degradation, these contain sulphur, alcoholic and other organic compounds.

Oral malodour can be caused due to oral and systemic conditions, about 85% of times the cause is oral, these may include tongue coating, gum diseases or a combination of the two.

Tongue coating is the most common cause of halitosis, thus, daily scraping of tongue, after brushing teeth is important.





Morning bad breath can be tackled easily with proper brushing, as this is a non pathological form.

Poor brushing techniques, tooth cavities, food accumulation and dental plaque also lead to bad breath, proper brushing and a visit to your dentist are the proper measures for maintenance pf oral cavity.

If you are a denture wearer, you must clean your dentures daily with soap and water, and remove them at night. denture must also be cleaned after every meal.

Another common reason is dry mouth, When the flow of saliva is reduced, the deposition of plaque increases and more bacteria. This is commonly seen in cases of diabetes, stress, depression and people who have undergone radiotherapy amongst others. dry mouth is also seen with increase in age. it can be treated with hydration and artificial saliva.
